WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Brown and Caldwell (BC) today proudly announces a collective $25,000 in scholarships has been awarded to five exceptional science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. Each year, BC recognizes promising full-time students pursuing careers in the environmental engineering industry who represent the firm’s values of technical and academic excellence, environmental stewardship, and supporting diversity in the industry.
LGBTQ Scholarship
The LGBTQ Scholarship honors students who identify as a member of the LGBTQ community and are interested in pursuing a career in the environmental industry. Madison Smith, an undergraduate at the University of Georgia (UGA) studying environmental engineering and Spanish, is this year’s LGTBQ scholarship honoree and will receive $5,000. Madison, whose focus is wastewater and stormwater, is president of the College of Engineering Student Ambassadors and is an active member of UGA’s Society of Women Engineers. Madison plans to graduate next spring.
Minority Scholarship Program
Through its Minority Scholarship Program, BC provides time and monetary commitment to invest in scholarships, internships, and mentoring for full-time minority college students at the junior, senior, or graduate level majoring in environmental engineering or one of the environmental sciences. This year’s recipient is Jasmine Blust, an environmental engineering undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University who recently completed an internship at BC’s Honolulu office. Jasmine, a peer chemistry tutor, has demonstrated a commitment to leadership and community service through her involvement in the university’s Engineers Without Borders chapter. Jasmine plans to graduate next spring.
Women in Leadership Scholarship
The Women in Leadership Scholarship supports students interested in pursuing a career in the environmental profession with a $5,000 award. This year’s honoree is Anndee Huff, a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota who is studying civil, environmental, and geo-engineering. Anndee’s research focuses on enhancing nitrogen removal from mainstream wastewater with newly developed materials to reduce energy requirements, treatment costs, and greenhouse gas emissions for the wastewater industry. While pursuing her degrees, Anndee also volunteers with Engineers Without Borders, Water For People, American Water Works Association (AWWA), among other organizations.
AWWA Dave Caldwell Scholarship
In partnership with AWWA and in recognition of BC co-founder Dave Caldwell’s contribution to engineering and technology in the drinking water field, the annual AWWA Dave Caldwell Scholarship awards $5,000 to a female and/or minority graduate student with demonstrated leadership ability in drinking water applied research and consulting. This year’s scholarship honors Dienye Tolofari, a doctoral student studying environmental engineering at Drexel University, with a focus on improving drinking water quality in building plumbing and conducting risk assessment to evaluate the impact of chemical and/or microbial contaminants in drinking water. Upon graduation, she plans to set up a microbial lab to analyze opportunistic pathogens found in drinking water systems.
Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder, Jr. Scholarship
BC also continued its tradition of offering the Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder, Jr. Scholarship. This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Eckenfelder and his more than 50 years of pioneering work in the environmental profession. Each year, BC awards this $5,000 scholarship to students pursuing education and a career within the environmental industry. The recipient for 2020 is Erica Dasi, a Ph.D. student at the University of South Florida (USF) where she is studying environmental engineering with a focus in the treatment of surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. Erica has a diverse background in leadership and community service with her involvement in the Florida Water Environment Association and the USF Chapter of Engineers Without Borders.
Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee of Brown and Caldwell professionals based on their academic accomplishments. The awards are open to full-time college students enrolled in their junior or senior years or graduate programs.
