WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — Brown and Caldwell (BC) today proudly announces a collective $25,000 in scholarships has been awarded to five exceptional students. Each year, BC recognizes promising full-time students pursuing careers in the environmental engineering industry who represent the firm’s values of technical and academic excellence, environmental stewardship, and supporting diversity in the industry.

The Women in Leadership Scholarship supports students interested in pursuing a career in the environmental profession with a $5,000 award. This year’s honoree is Mia Goldberg, an undergraduate at Tufts University where she is studying chemical engineering. Mia’s undergraduate experience includes an internship with Heartland Water Technology that deepened her interest in biosolids, the wastewater industry, and Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Mia will be continuing her education at Tufts University in the fall to pursue her master’s degree in chemical engineering.

Through its Minority Scholarship Program, BC provides time and monetary commitment to invest in scholarships, internships, and mentoring for full-time minority college students at the junior, senior, or graduate level majoring in environmental engineering or one of the environmental sciences. This year’s recipient is Kaley Yazzie, an environmental engineering undergraduate at Arizona State University with focuses on water management and water treatment. Kaley is an intern at the firm’s Phoenix office and is pursuing her master’s in hydrosystems engineering.

The LGBTQIA+ Scholarship honors students who identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and interested in pursuing a career in the environmental industry. Dalton Keys, a civil engineering undergraduate from the University of Michigan is this year’s LGTBQIA+ scholarship honoree and will receive $5,000. Dalton plans to pursue his master’s degree in structural engineering at University of Michigan this fall.

In partnership with AWWA and in recognition of BC co-founder Dave Caldwell’s contribution to engineering and technology in the drinking water field, the annual AWWA Dave Caldwell Scholarship awards $5,000 to a female and/or minority graduate student with demonstrated leadership ability in drinking water applied research and consulting. This year’s Dave Caldwell scholarship honors Meena Ejjada, a Ph.D. student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) where she is studying environmental engineering with a focus on water accessibility and sanitation for communities and crop irrigation. Meena has a diverse background in leadership and community service with her involvement in the Water Environment Federation UNLV student chapter and the local Rebel STEM Academy. She plans to complete her Ph.D. program in Fall 2022 and begin her postdoctoral program in Spring 2023.

BC has continued its tradition of offering the Dr. W. Wesley Eckenfelder, Jr. Scholarship. This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Eckenfelder and his more than 50 years of pioneering work in the environmental profession. Each year, BC awards this $5,000 scholarship to students pursuing education and a career within the environmental industry. The recipient for 2021 is Joshua Dunlap, a graduate student at the University of Georgia studying environmental engineering with a focus on energy systems. Joshua received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cleveland State University and plans to improve water resources and sustainability.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee of BC professionals on the basis of their academic accomplishments. Scholarships are open to full-time college students enrolled in their junior or senior years or graduate programs.
