On July 29, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a final rule to significantly limit the lead content allowed in plumbing materials in accordance with the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act. This action marks an additional step taken to protect the public from the risks associated with lead exposure. The final regulation, “Use of Lead Free Pipes, Fittings, Fixtures, Solder, and Flux for Drinking Water,” also requires manufacturers and importers to certify that their products intended for use in plumbing of water for human consumption meet the newly reduced percentage of allowable lead content. The final rule will become effective 30 days after publication in the Federal Register and the certification requirement must be implemented within three years.
