In the summer of 1999 a multi-purpose reservoir is scheduled to open for recreational use by the public. Located in Sarpy County, Nebraska, Papillion Dam Site 21 is one of the 21 reservoirs originally proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1987 to provide flood control and water-based recreation in the Papillion Creek Watershed. Current land use in the watershed is entirely agricultural. Dam Site 21 has the potential to support a sport fishery and aquatic recreation if nonpoint source pollution is controlled. The objectives of this study were to one, predict sediment and nutrient loads that will affect water quality in the proposed reservoir as the watershed transitions from agricultural to urban uses and two, recommend the type and placement of best management practices (BMPs) to minimize pollutant loadings on the reservoir.
