Growing public awareness and increased scientific knowledge have generated a clearer recognition of the need for an integrated management system to resolve the environmental degradation of coastal areas. Integrated coastal management (ICM) is an ecologically based approach to the management of the coastal environment. It is especially useful for areas having a predominantly urban theme. A complete ICM will address all important issues in coastal waters, coastal lands and sediments, costal ecosystems and coastal hazards.
