A large petrochemical facility in a water-limited area is facing a critical water problem because of several factors: total dissolved solids content in raw water is increasing; water is rationed during droughts, limiting production; the facility is planning a major expansion that will increase its water requirements; and the community persistently pressures the facility to reduce its wastewater discharge. Researchers conducted a water resource management and planning study to alleviate the problems.
