The City and County of San Francisco is presently undertaking a comprehensive program to upgrade its wastewater treatment and disposal system. This program is necessitated by the fact the present wastewater effluents with primary treatment augmented by ferric chloride addition do not meet State and Federal discharge requirements. The problem is complicated by the fact that the City has an antiquated combined sewerage system which discharges raw sewage approximately 80 times each season.
