A 90-mgd Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) Plant is currently under construction by Clark County, Nevada. The AWT Plant was designed to provide phosphorus removal to control algal growth in the Las Vegas Bay portion of Lake Mead and is capable of producing an effluent with 10 mg/l Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), 2 mg/l Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and 0.5 mg/l Total Phosphorus (P). As a result of a court settlement in March 1979 between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State of Nevada (State), Clark County, and the Cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, the effluent requirements for the AW Plant are currently being reassessed. A comprehensive study program is underway to meet two specific objectives: (1) To establish appropriate water quality standards for Lake Mead and Las Vegas Wash, particularly for nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. (2) To determine the most efficient use of existing wastewater treatment facilities to meet the standards.
