The term “automation”, as applied to wastewater treatment, refers to the automatically controlled operation of a process or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human observation, decision and effort. The basic requirements for automatically controlled operations are, therefore, (1) measurement of a variable, (2) comparison of this measurement to a reference and (3) adjustment of either the variable or an independent function to compensate for the difference between measured value and reference.
